Monday is the last day to submit your application for scholarships and financial aid. Be sure to reserve some time this weekend to finish them up and send them in.
That means that this is the last post in the Fulfill Your Dreams with NLC series in which we profile past scholarship winners.
Today we’ll meet Cameron Bateman of Kearns, UT, and the Elevator Constructors Union (IUEC) Local 38, who set lofty goals for himself and achieved them with a little help from the Union Plus NLC Scholarship program.
When we first met Cameron back in 2008, he had just started his degree and hoped to complete it in four years. Cameron is shown here with his daughter, Emma when he first enrolled. We’re proud to say that Cameron completed his degree and graduated this spring.
With gas prices and the rest of my expenses rising, I never thought that I would be able to go back and get a college degree, scholarships make that possible.
Cameron had been a staff member of his local for two years when he decided to rejoin the rank and file of his union. After organizing with health care workers in Portland, OR, and being active in his local in Utah, Cameron decided it was time to think big:
There are so many policies in our country that are bad for workers, and I have always wanted to work for big change. I want to work to create the policies that can make life better for working people, for that I need to have a college degree.
